Trust your Doubt
When you believe someone will not do you wrong under any circumstances you trust the person. We also use trust to say something about a situation , a theory or ideology, even some abstract concept can be trusted. Obviously this means that the meaning of the concept of trust is blurred by transition of meaning in language ,from trust in God,to trust in your gut feeling and even trust in the banking system .
First let us state that trust is not an emotion or feeling ,it is not a mood , it is not as variable as emotions or feelings,so let us say it is a “state of mind “ based on a belief but it is itself not really a belief. At the basis of trust there is :the notion of evil which you want to avoid, faith in the good of something, the uncertainty of the future and how to cope with that by prediction ,relational properties with respect to the trusted person ,situation or concept.
Clearly we should distinguish “concrete trust” in an existing subject and “abstract trust” in a non-real object like a concept but these two are mixed in strange ways very often ,for example a trust in reason or logic may influence other trust-relations with theories, religions but also even people. Thus we observe a certain order relation between different trusts ,one is before another if it implies or causes the other, for example if I trust in God it may imply my trust in some priest and even my lack of trust in Science or a doctor even.We call a “primitive trust” one that is not implied by another, that means we look for trusts which generate all other trusts one might have and we want to see whether these primitive trusts are maybe always abstract trusts ?
A concrete trust one has ,say in a person, depends completely on that person, the relation between the person and other persons does not influence the trust relation, for example if you trust some man you do not necessarily also trust his son or brother,so relation between the objects of trust do not (in fact should not!) yield an implication of the trust relation. So two concrete trust relations are not implying one another. One can argue that only abstract trust relations can imply a concrete trust, for example a trust in God could yield a trust in certain people (eg in the same religion) .Is every concrete trust relation a specialization of an abstract one, in other words can your trust in a person always be seen as a specialization of a trust in a concept. It could be that there is a natural trust in “family” or in people from the same tribe or neighborhood. There is certainly a trust in Love (which I will come back to in a future post on Love) which could be used to generate many trust relations by specialization . There could be a trust in “honesty” or even “status” aso,so it seems clear that any concrete trust exists with a reason which can only come from our cognitive analysis of a situation . The abstract properties which give rise to the trust may be combined in an “existence” concept for the trust and thus indeed every concrete trust can be derived from an abstract trust . With abstract trusts the relation is more complex, for example depending on the definition of something you call God it is possible that trust in Love (as a concept!) follows from your trust in your god,the converse is possible too depending on the definitions you use for God and Love . Hence for abstract trusts the specialization relation does connect to possible relations between the trusted concepts or abstract structures. If one allows abstract structures which are very generic ,like the concept of a God as in the bible then obviously that trust in such generic concept is the only primitive trust ,but this depends on the abstract structures you allow, accept, believe in or just fantasize . If one does not allow such abstract structures then one immediately faces the question :do you trust yourself ? Then ,if yes, every abstract (hence also for concrete)trust can be derived from your trust in yourself because you trust “your” choice of the trusted concept, person, object…. If you do not trust yourself ,can you trust anything else ? So if you do not allow some “fantastic” generic abstract structures your trust in yourself is the unique primitive one (you are a god to yourself ,say) or you have to face the situation where you do not trust but “doubt” yourself
We have seen so far that the most interesting case of human trust is the case where you do not trust in some unique primitive trust ,also not in yourself .Like all emotions, moods, feelings, the state of trust is not constant in level ,so some “certain” trusts may become less certain or even broken or lost completely . This is also where doubt comes in ,you are not absolutely sure you trust yourself ,that is related to which experiences you go through and how you evaluate your behavior and so it also depends on the values you hold high ! Probably the higher and stricter the values you hold high the more doubt about yourself will arise. It is hard to be absolutely certain about something and it is impossible to be certain about many things . Doubt will thus be the situation all humans have to live with when being honest to themselves and it does not matter what certainties they preach in public!Since trust will be instrumental in Faith,Love,Friendship ,aso ,it has to be considered as a “good thing”,in fact not the absolute trust as mentioned before but the doubting trust is extremely useful,it is closely connected to knowledge of human nature and for the abstract trust it connects to the scientific research method. Now ,like everything “trust” is not really a state but it is a process evolving through a relation with someone or something (even an abstract concept) ,its changes are mainly determined by changes in yourself and your interpretations of reality including yourself and to a lesser extent by possible changes in the trusted person or concept. So one should not view “trust” as an acquired invariant state of a relation ,but as a process of building trust (or breaking it down) through critical regular assessment of the trust-relation and its validity . In the language just developed here we thus may conclude that you may look at the concept doubt (or your doubt) and you can build an abstract trust in that concept which will then be the generic primitive trust for all your trusts in your life :”trust your doubt” . That does not mean you say doubt is god or something like that ,but you put your trust in doubting everything and doing that through critical analysis build on the system of values you constructed in exactly that same” doubting” way ,so these are processes in symbiosis.
This concludes my story on trust,I wrote these ideas in raw form,so some polishing may be necessary but I hope it made you think about it.
